The viewpoints

From Wikidata (CC0): scenic viewpoints, observation towers and decks, fire-lookout towers, Ferris wheels and famous cliffs; and the best-known summits and canyons of our sister atlases Peakyas and Canyonyas.

The panorama

Copernicus DEM GLO-90 and GLO-30 (© DLR e.V., © Airbus Defence and Space GmbH, provided under COPERNICUS by the European Union and ESA): for each degree of the circle, the highest angle of the relief up to 250 km and the distance to it, with Earth curvature and refraction (k = 0.13); where the horizon is at sea level, the sea.

The peaks in view

The named summits of Peakyas, our mountain atlas (Wikidata, CC0), within 150 km whose angle rises above the relief in front of them.

The sun

Calculated with the classical algorithms of Jean Meeus (Astronomical Algorithms) against the panorama of each viewpoint. Time zones from GeoNames (CC BY 4.0).

Clouds

NASA POWER: cloud amount (CERES SYN1deg, 2001–2020) and temperature (MERRA-2, 1991–2020), monthly averages for a cell of about 55 km.

What is around

OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL): other viewpoints, cable cars, trails, car parks, places to stay — only inside the pages, never in downloadable files.

Images

Photographs from Wikimedia Commons, each with its author and licence. Seen from above: Sentinel-2 cloudless 2016 by EOX (CC BY 4.0).

The family

Do you prefer beaches, lakes, mountains, waterfalls, islands, rivers, canyons, caves, dark skies, viewpoints, birdwatching or forests?

Same idea, other landscapes: field atlases built on open data, in seven languages.
